I would love to judge your upcoming exhibit!
I hold both ANG and NAN Judging Certifications, and I love contributing to events and exhibits that grow and develop needlework artisans.
My Judging Certifications
I earned my ANG Judging Certification in August 2014 and renewed it in August 2019. I currently serve as the Vice Chairperson of the ANG Judging Certification Program.
I earned my NAN Judging Certification in March 2015 and renewed it in March 2019.
My Judging Philosophy
Judging artwork or needlework is really one person’s opinion on a given day at a given time. The time spent examining each individual piece is limited to a few minutes, especially in light of the time spent creating by the entrant. The same judge can look at the same well done pieces on another day and see different positives and negatives that may produce a different winner. Judges are knowledgeable, detail-oriented people who are committed to the study of needlework as art and craftsmanship–not the Stitch Police!
Good judges have sound reasons for the decision or points they award. They have confidence in their determinations and are able to defend a position if necessary with specific rationale, whether it is an element of design or the compensation of a stitch.
I personally believe the role of a judge includes providing useful feedback to the entrant on what is done well and what can be done better. This feedback must include praise and point out specific areas or techniques that are well done. Problems must also be addressed in the same specific ways, PLUS how to improve on a future project. Most importantly, feedback must include encouragement so the stitcher will desire to continue stitching.
Judging needleart is a joy! I see each piece as a treasure, with my art training and stitching expertise serving to unlock the secrets. When I do it well, the exhibitor grows in knowledge, is encouraged, and desires to raise the quality of their stitching on the next project. At the same time, I am inspired and challenged by pieces in the exhibit to learn more about evolving needleart forms or stitching techniques. This cycle inspires growth and develops interest in the preservation of the needle arts.
